Sweden Consultations on Yemen to Focus on Humanitarian Issues - Member of Gov't Delegation

Discussions at the next round of consultations on Yemen in Sweden will focus on humanitarian issues, Hamza Alkamaly, a member of the government delegation to the UN-backed talks in Geneva and to the upcoming round of consultations in Sweden, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th November, 2018) Discussions at the next round of consultations on Yemen in Sweden will focus on humanitarian issues, Hamza Alkamaly, a member of the government delegation to the UN-backed talks in Geneva and to the upcoming round of consultations in Sweden, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

Last week, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths announced that both the government of Yemen and the Houthis, officially known as the Ansar Allah movement, were committed to attending the consultations on Yemen.

"In Sweden, they will be discussing humanitarian issues mainly, and there is a proposal, which will be offered by the UN special envoy, that will be discussed. I think if we could meet together we can make progress," Alkamaly said.

The possible dates of the consultations in Sweden will be announced on November 29-30, according to an adviser to Yemen's minister of information, Mukhtar Al-Rahbi.

In September, the United Nations attempted to hold peace talks between the warring parties in Geneva but the Houthi side said that they were prevented from leaving Yemen, allegations the Saudi-led coalition denied.

Yemen has been gripped by a civil war between President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi's government and the Shiite Houthi movement since 2015. The government is backed by the Saudi-led coalition that has been carrying out airstrikes that target areas controlled by the Houthis since March 2015.
