Three people, including a police officer, were wounded in Poland during the march in honor of the centenary of Polish independence in Wroclaw, police chief Jaroslaw Szymczyk said Monday.

Two counter-manifestations took place at the Independence Day march in Wroclaw on Sunday.

"They threw different things. Two citizens got cut wounds ... A police officer was seriously injured in the eye," Szymczyk said at a press conference in Warsaw.

According to the police chief, the local authorities ignored police requests to ban the demonstration organized by a potentially dangerous group.

Police cordoned off the participants of two demonstrations, but they still tried to start a scuffle.

Szymczyk added that the police were working on identifying the perpetrators.

The centenary of independence was celebrated in Poland on Sunday. The holiday is dedicated to the re-establisment of the country`s independence in 1918. Approximately 200,000 people participated in the Independence Day march through central Warsaw, including Polish far-right groups. Some participants used extremist slogans and burned the flag of the European Union. Similar marches were held in other Polish cities.
