United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena to offer condolences and counter-terrorism assistance in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the South Asian nation on Easter Sunday, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said during a press briefing on Wednesday
"This morning the Secretary-General spoke to President Sirisena of Sri Lanka to express directly the United Nations total solidarity with the people and government of Sri Lanka," Dujarric told reporters.
"The Secretary-General also offered the support of the UN's office of counter-terrorism to the government."
On Easter Sunday, Sri Lanka was shaken by a series of coordinated attacks that left 359 people dead and over 500 wounded. Colombo has launched a massive security operation in the wake of the tragedy, with nearly 60 people detained over their suspected involvement in the deadly bombings.
The Islamic State terrorist organization (banned in Russia) reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks on Tuesday.
