Cuba To Open Railway Operation To Foreigners - Reports

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) The amendments to the Cuban regulation on national railway system, which will come into force in 30 days, will allow foreign companies to operate the railways in Cuba, local media reported on Thursday.

According to the amended legislation, railways can be operated wholly or in part by a foreign or domestic individual or legal entity, the Granma newspaper reported, citing the country's Gaceta Oficial official journal.

Railways in Cuba serve as the main means of land transport, that is why their structure, organization and management play a crucial role in the economic and social development of the country, the news outlet added.

The measure is aimed at modernizing the railway sector, which was nationalized following the Cuban revolution in 1959.
