The Supreme Court has approved to change the name of dams fund
Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 24th September, 2018) The Supreme Court has approved to change the name of dams fund as ‘Supreme Court/Prime Minister Dam Fund’.
A four member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar approved changing the name of ‘Supreme Court of Pakistan Diamer Basha and Mohmand Dam Fund’ to ‘Supreme Court/Prime Minister Dam Fund’.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) had moved an application seeking renaming of the fund which was approved by the CJP.
A representative of the SBP informed the CJP that the Ministry of Finance has already named the fund as Prime Minister/Chief Justice Dam Fund.
At this, the CJP remarked that Prime Minister Imran Khan had sought his permission to rename the fund.
The prime minister said he wanted to join the fund, CJP Nisar added.
He said the court didn’t have any objection to the prime minister changing the fund’s name, but prior permission was not sought from the bench for the purpose.
A Federal law officer contended that changing the name of the fund could cause certain problems such as its name would have to be changed in all advertisements.
At this, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, who was a member of the bench, suggested the fund name in the advertisements which had already been placed should stay the same, while the new ones should have the new name.
The fund dedicated to the construction of Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Dams was established by the SBP on the directions of the Supreme Court. All the commercial and micro-finance banks, and field offices of SBP Banking Services Corporation have opened the Fund account to receive donations in cash, and through cheques, pay orders and demand drafts at all their branches across the country.
The trend was started by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar himself who donated Rs 10 lac and then another Rs 1 lac for the construction of dams and has so far received generous donations from various individuals and groups.
Endorsing the CJP's initiative, Prime Minister Imran Khan also made an impassioned appeal to all Pakistanis, particularly its overseas diaspora, to donate funds in US Dollars to help the country build dams, as it could face major droughts by the year 2025.
