PHEC Establishes Community Colleges In Punjab

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Oct, 2016 ) : The Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) in collaboration with Higher Education Department (HED) has established community colleges with an aim to provide market-oriented skilled education to students on the pattern of United States, Canada and other developed countries.
This was stated by PHEC Chairperson Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nizamuddin while addressing the orientation workshop at the University of Education, Township Campus Lahore on Friday. "Graduates of these colleges will have a number of career prospects, they can get jobs in the local industry, and even get a chance for global opportunities in their respective fields", Dr.
Nizam added. Vice Chancellor University of Education Dr. Rauf-i-Azam, Director General PHEC Dr. Muhammad Shahid Soroya, Director Academics and Research PHEC Miss Sidra Maqsood, Director Quality Assurance PHEC Miss Zainab Siraj and other officers were also present at the occasion.
Dr. Nizam said that students were being offered two-year associate degree programme in market-driven subjects in the initial phase in selected colleges including Govt. College Township Lahore, Govt.
Post-Graduate College for Women Gujranwala, Govt. College Civil Lines Multan and Govt. College for Women Faisalabad. These colleges would offer two-year associate degree equivalent to bachelors (semester system) programs, in subjects such as Information Technology, Accounting & Finance, Media, Information Technology and Fine Arts.
Dr Nizam said that the curriculum for these courses had been developed in close consultation with experts from academics, industry and community, focusing on the needs of these sectors. Director Academics and Research PHEC, Miss Sidra Maqsood, elaborated on the structure of the semester system and the evaluation criteria for the community college programme.
