The Punjab Emergency Service (PES) on Monday observed the World Earth Day to sensitize people about increasing number of emergencies and disasters taking place due to environmental change, global warming, ozone depletion and pollution
In this regard, earth awareness activities including walks, seminars and extracurricular activities were arranged.
The participants were carrying banners, leaflets, booklets inscribed with awareness information about the Earth Day and raised slogans "Let us Rescue the Mother Earth" to create awareness among people to protect earth by reducing factors leading to emergencies and disasters due to climate change.
The PES arranged specialised activities including plantation campaign and speech competition.
DG Rescue Punjab Dr Rizwan Naseer said that community participation in earth awareness walk was a symbol of ownership by the community and if joint efforts were not made on priority basis by people, media and corporate sector to "rescue the earth", the community would be affected by such environmental emergencies in the coming years.
He said that in the wake of climate change, flash flooding and floods have significantly increased in Pakistan, hence the enhanced role of emergency services.
The DG Rescue appreciated rescuers and volunteers from different organisations to organise the event about Earth Day and said that all stakeholders could play a vital role in building safer communities by adopting preventing measures and promoting clean & green culture around them.
