Americans are worried that the US federal government is not doing enough to regulate social media, a new Survey Monkey poll conducted for "Axios on HBO" revealed.
Fifty-five percent of poll respondents said they are concerned the US federal government will not do enough to regulate how technology companies operate, while 40 percent said that they are worried the government goes too far in imposing restrictions, the poll results showed.
Also, 57 percent of poll respondents said that social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook hurt efforts to promote democracy and free speech and 40 percent believe that it helps, according to the poll findings.
While 59 percent of poll respondents say they believe technology will make life for them and their families better in a decade, 15 percent say they consider technology will make life worse and 4 percent say it will take away more jobs than it creates.
When asked how they would prefer to communicate, 42 percent of poll respondents say they prefer in-person communication, 21 percent say they prefer communication via text messages, 16 percent say they prefer talking over the telephone and 15 percent prefer communicating via email. Only 2 percent said prefer to use social media.
The majority of poll respondents - 63 percent - shared that they keep their phones in or next to their beds while sleeping, and 65 percent believe that smartphones changed their lives for better.
The poll was conducted between November 9 and 13 and 3,622 Americans participated in it.
