Checkpoint on Syrian-Iraqi Border to Resume Work in Coming Days - Iraqi Military

Iraqi Chief of General Staff Gen. Osman Ganimi said on Monday that a checkpoint along the border between Iraq and Syria will be reopened in the coming days after being closed for several years due to terrorist activities

DAMASCUS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th March, 2019) Iraqi Chief of General Staff Gen. Osman Ganimi said on Monday that a checkpoint along the border between Iraq and Syria will be reopened in the coming days after being closed for several years due to terrorist activities.

"God willing, in the next few days, the border checkpoint will be opened and trips and visits between the countries will resume," Ganimi said at a joint press conference with Syrian Defense Minister Ali Ayoub and Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces.

Ganimi did not specify the name if the border crossing but said that the countries constantly coordinated on this issue within the framework of a specialized committee.

He added that the matter was also discussed at the trilateral meeting of the chiefs of the general staffs in Damascus in January.

After almost eight years of fighting, Damascus has finally regained control over most of the territories that were previously seized by terrorist groups. The Syrian government is now focused on rebuilding the infrastructure to welcome back Syrian refugees who have fled the war.
