EU Declares Readiness To Work With New Parliament, Government Of Armenia

BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The European Union is ready to work with the new parliament and the future government of Armenia, EU diplomatic service said in a statement on Monday.
On December 9, Armenia held snap parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's My Step Alliance wins theelection with over 70 percent of the vote, and the former ruling Republican Party failed to clear the 5-percent threshold to get into the parliament.
"We look forward to working with the democratically elected new Parliament and the future Government to deepen our political and economic relations based on the joint commitments of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement," the statement says.
The European Union also noted the importance of snap parliamentary elections were important in terms of enhancing public trust toward the electoral process in the country.
"The European Union is committed to a stable, democratic and prosperous future of Armenia," it concluded.
Since 2010, Armenia and the European Union have been negotiating an association agreement, including the creation of a free trade zone, but when Yerevan joined the Eurasian Economic Union, they decided to sign the comprehensive and enhanced partnership agreement instead. It entered into force on June 1.
