MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 30th May, 2019) A new field hospital with advanced medical facilities will open this week in Al-Hawl refugee camp in the Syrian Hasakah province on the border with Iraq to cover the heightened need of health care, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement on Thursday.
The ICRC is working in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and the Norwegian Red Cross to set up this hospital with the aim of meeting the increased humanitarian needs of the 74,000 refugees in Al-Hawl, of whom 90 percent are women and children.
"The deterioration of the health situation in the Camp rang a bell to the need of this medical facility, which is the first of its kind, designed to provide a higher level of health care services, among it high efficient surgeries. The field hospital is considered one of the most advanced facilities used in disaster response," SARC President Khaled Hboubati was quoted as saying in the statement.
According to the statement, the hospital will start with 30 beds and include an emergency room, operating room, post-operative care and a laboratory. It will be staffed by medical personnel from Red Cross Societies in Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.
The Syrian civil war has resulted in over 5.6 million refugees and over 6 million internally displaced people since 2011. The government forces, led by President Bashar Assad, have regained control over most of the country's territories, so the country is now focused on creating favorable repatriation conditions for the refugees. Moscow assists Damascus in this process by providing humanitarian aid and acting as a ceasefire guarantor.
