Hungary Receives From Gazprom Guarantees of Gas Deliveries in 2020 - Foreign Minister

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) Budapest received from Russian gas giant Gazprom assurances that the latter will ship gas to Hungary in 2020 even if the talks between Moscow and Kiev on gas transit will end in failure, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller and Szijjarto held a working meeting in Moscow to discuss current cooperation issues, including gas deliveries.

"Today, the Gazprom CEO and I concluded an agreement on the fact that Gazprom will be assuring Hungary's natural gas supply irrespective of whether a transit agreement comes about between Russia and Ukraine with relation to the future," Szijjarto said, as quoted in a statement published on the ministry's website.

The trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the European Commission on the future of gas transit via Ukraine were launched in mid-July. The second round of these negotiations concluded without an agreement in late January. The current contract regulating the transit of the Russian gas through Ukraine between Gazprom and Naftogaz expires at the end of this year.
