MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) External power supply was cut off at Japan's Tomari nuclear power plant (NPP) after a powerful earthquake, local media reported Thursday.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake was registered at 18:08 GMT Wednesday some 67 kilometers (42 miles) from the city of Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido.
After the loss of external power sources, the spent nuclear fuel pools of the Tomari NPP in Hokkaido are being cooled by an emergency power supply system, the Kyodo news agency reported, citing the Nuclear Regulation Authority.
The earthquake provoked a blackout in the vast territory in Hokkaido, also affecting telecommunications and broadcasting in the city of Sapporo, the publication said.
