Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has lashed out at the United States and the European Union for their "attacks" on the Latin and Central American countries that pursue independent polices.
MEXICO CITY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th December, 2018) Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has lashed out at the United States and the European Union for their "attacks" on the Latin and Central American countries that pursue independent polices.
"All these actions, these attacks, which are carried out across the world by the North American and European superpowers, have no legal justification, these are war crimes," Ortega was quoted by the AVN news agency as saying at the summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) in Havana on Friday.
The US interventionist policies toward Venezuela and Cuba represent disrespect for international law, according to Ortega.
"Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of 98 percent of the UN voted to stop the blockade of Cuba, the North American power does not comply [with this decision]," the president argued.
The statement comes as Nicaragua is facing harsh criticism from the United States and the European Union over its handling of months-long social protests in the country and alleged crackdown on democratic rights.
Most recently on November 27, the United States decided to sanction Nicaragua's Vice President and First Lady Rosario Murillo as well as National Security Advisor Nestor Moncada for purported corruption and human rights abuses. Later, it urged the international community to join the restrictions to "impose additional costs" on the country.
