MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) Over 2,000 buildings across Moscow will take part in Earth Hour, a worldwide movement that aims to draw attention to environmental issues, by turning off their lights, Deputy Mayor of Moscow Government on Housing, Utilities and Improvement Pyotr Biryukov said on Tuesday.

"Over 2,000 places in Moscow will turn off their architectural lighting for an hour from 20:30 until 21:30 [17:30-18:30 GMT]. We invite all Muscovites to join the event and turn off their lights at home as a sign of solidarity with the movement to preserve planet's natural resources," Biryukov said.

The most famous Moscow buildings, such as the Moscow Kremlin, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Luzhniki Stadium, the Bolshoi Theater, Ostankino Tower, and State Duma and Federation Council buildings, will turn off their lights, just as they have done in previous years, Biryukov specified.

New Arbat Avenue and Tverskaya Street, hotels and train stations, Zaryadye Park, and the pavilions of the city's famed Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy will also participate in the event.

World Wildlife Fund Russia chose Zaryadye Park, which is located right next to Red Square, to host a symbolic ceremony to switch off the architectural lighting of Moscow sights this year.

Earth Hour came to Moscow in 2009. Since then, the number of buildings participating has grown from 60 to 2,155.

Earth Hour will be held on March 30. Nowadays it unites almost 2 billion people in 188 nations all over the world. The main aim of the action is to draw attention to climate change, conservation of natural resources and other environmental issues.
