Pakistani Foreign Ministry Summoned US Envoy to Protest Trumps' Allegations - Reports

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry summoned US Charge d'Affaires in Pakistan Paul Jones on Tuesday to protest "baseless" claims directed at the South Asian country by US President Donald Trump, media reported.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th November, 2018) The Pakistani Foreign Ministry summoned US Charge d'Affaires in Pakistan Paul Jones on Tuesday to protest "baseless" claims directed at the South Asian country by US President Donald Trump, media reported.

On Sunday, Trump wrote that Pakistan was paid billions of US Dollars and "did nothing" to assist the United States in fighting terrorism, including in Afghanistan and the operation to capture al-Qaeda terror group's (banned in Russia) leader Osama Bin Laden. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the United States should assess the efficiency of its military operation in Afghanistan instead of making Pakistan a scapegoat for its failures in the region.

"[Foreign Secretary of Pakistan Tehmina Janjua conveyed] her government's disappointment on the recent tweets and comments by the US president, [adding] that such baseless rhetoric about Pakistan was totally unacceptable .

.. Rejecting the insinuations about Osama Bin Laden, the foreign secretary reminded the US charge d'affaires that it was Pakistan's intelligence cooperation that provided the initial evidence to trace the whereabouts of OBL," the ministry's statement reads, as quoted by the Geo news broadcaster.

The statement adds that it is Pakistan's cooperation that helped to eliminate the al-Qaeda's top leadership and to deal with the terror threat in the region, and that was acknowledged by the United States.

In September, the Pentagon suspended $300 million in aid to Islamabad, citing the government's alleged failure to fight the Taliban and terrorists groups that conduct cross-border attacks from Pakistani territory into Afghanistan. The US move came after Washington announced in January that it was suspending $900 million in security aid to Islamabad until it takes action against the Afghan Taliban.
