MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th April, 2019) Belgrade appreciates Moscow's support in the protection of Serbian territorial integrity and sovereignty, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said on Wednesday after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Dacic noted that Serbia would always cooperate with Russia, while attempting to find political solutions to problems of the Balkan region.
"I express my sincere gratitude to Russia for its support and express gratitude to [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin and to my friend and colleague Sergey Lavrov for the support they provide, when it comes to defending our territorial integrity and sovereignty," Dacic said.
Russia and Serbia have long had friendly relations, dating back to the 19th century when Serbia gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. The countries are also actively developing economic, defense and diplomatic cooperation.
Serbia is one of the few states in Europe that refused to join Western sanctions against Russia. Russia, on its part, has been providing invaluable assistance to Serbia on the global stage regarding Kosovar-Serbian reconciliation.
The two countries regularly maintain contacts at various levels, including at the highest one.
