MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th November, 2018) The UN special coordinator for the middle East peace process, Nickolay Mladenov, said Monday he was working closely with Egypt to end a spike of violence between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
"UN is working closely with Egypt and all concerned to ensure that Gaza steps back from the brink. The escalation in the past 24hrs is EXTREMELY dangerous and reckless.
Rockets must STOP, restraint must be shown by all! No effort must be spared to reverse the spiral of violence," he tweeted.
Hostilities erupted after a Hamas commander and several other militants as well as an Israeli soldier were killed in a covert operation overnight by Israel.
The Israeli military said some 300 rockets were fired throughout Monday into the southern territories. It claimed it had hit 20 targets belonging to Hamas and an Islamist movement in the enclave. The Hamas-run Al-Aqsa tv station was destroyed.
