UN Special Envoy for Syria Said Progress Made towards Political Settlement - Spokesman

United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen believes that progress has been made toward implementing a ceasefire and reaching a political settlement in Syria, UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Tuesday

UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen believes that progress has been made toward implementing a ceasefire and reaching a political settlement in Syria, UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

"Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has been in Damascus for the past two days where he had good, in-depth discussions with Foreign Minister Walid Moallem on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2254," Haq said. "Special envoy Pedersen stressed that progress was made and that he looks forward to returning to continue good cooperation that has been established."

UN Security Council Resolution 2254, adopted in December 2015, calls on all parties to the conflict in Syria to immediately cease attacks against civilians, implement a ceasefire and engage in political negotiations.

Haq noted that on Tuesday Pedersen will visit Syria's Homs, where he is scheduled to meet internally displaced persons and returnees, as well as observe the UN humanitarian assistance.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and militant and terrorist organizations. As the Syrian government has regained control over most of the country's territories that were seized by terrorists, it is now focused on creating favorable conditions for repatriating refugees. Moscow is assisting Damascus in this process, along with providing humanitarian aid to civilians and being a guarantor of the ceasefire.
