TransMin Sova Promises More Rail Transport Services From 2019 On

'I would like to mention that Regulation 1370 does not concern regular passenger road transport, it also concerns the transport of passengers by rail. We have already had discussions with the trade unions and the managements; we are preparing the legislation and we will implement a system for liberalisation. From July 1, 2019 on, Romanian consumers will find a wider offering of railway transport as well on the part of operators other than the traditional domestic ones, like the national corporation and a few private operators,' Sova said.

He added that if an adequate budget is allocated, many speed restrictions that are currently in force for railway traffic can be reduced.

'As far as we have the appropriate budget support, we have the ability to greatly reduce the speed restrictions that operate today. In addition to upgrading the main railways that allow speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour for freight trains, 160 kilometers per hour for passenger trains, we will of course need to have the rolling stock required for proper operation on this type of rails. If wehave sufficient resources, the company that manages the infrastructure has 23,000 employeeswho can repair, can build a railway at least at the standards we had in 1990,' the minister said.
