Fasting Beneficial For Diabetics With Due Stock For Medical Supervision

KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Apr, 2019 ) :Scientific studies have proved that fasting is beneficial in prevention and management of diabetes, however, adequate supervision of doctors must be ensured, said a senior diabetologist and researcher, Dr. Zafar Abbasi.
Talking to APP Tuesday the doctor associated with Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology (BIDE), besides being an active member of Ramadan Study Group, said fasting also protects people in general against risks of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers and other associated health conditions.
"Provision for safe fasting during holy month of Ramadan does exists for diabetics but it is equally important that they do acquire pre-Ramadan education and consult their physicians for safe fasting in the month of Ramadan," he said.
Emphasising that diabetes control and regulation are crucial requirements for people living with diabetes, he said those who despite their health conditions prefer to fast must be provided prior education regarding their dietary plans, dose management of medicines and insulin.
"It is equally important that they may learn when and how to check their blood glucose levels and what should be done in case of low and high blood sugar levels while fasting," he said in reply to a question.
"Studies have also proved that fasting helps diabetics to manage insulin resistance due to weight reduction and that it also improves brain function besides regulation of mood disorders," said Dr. Abbasi.
Fasting was reminded to be equally helpful in management of hypertension, a root cause of renal failure and other related health conditions.
