UAE renews stance towards legitimate rights of Palestinian people

The UAE has renewed its stance towards the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, by continuing its humanitarian support totalling US$1 billion, which was provided from 2013 to the end of 2018

GENEVA, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 19th Mar, 2019) The UAE has renewed its stance towards the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, by continuing its humanitarian support totalling US$1 billion, which was provided from 2013 to the end of 2018.

The UAE also expressed its concern over the failure of some states to take part in the agenda item seven discussions, causing serious consequences for the suffering of the Palestinian people. The actions of Israel breached many aspects of international humanitarian law, including forced detention, and the ongoing blockade.

During a general debate held by the Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories, the UAE has also supported all international and regional efforts to end Israel’s occupation and establish a Palestinian state, with its capital in East Jerusalem.

The UAE announced that it is adding its voice to two statements by the Arab and Islamic groups regarding the decision of some countries to not participate in the discussions.

The UAE made this statement during its speech at the 40th session of the Human Rights Council, which was given by Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN in Geneva, as part of the general discussions on the state of human rights in Palestine and other occupied Arab lands.

Al Zaabi stressed that the UAE is concerned and surprised as some countries are refusing to discuss the clause, which is contrary to the General Assembly Resolution 251/60 that calls on the council to promote universal human rights.

He further stressed that this political stance by the relevant countries will establish a dangerous precedent, as it constitutes selectivity and double standards, and will encourage systematic violations of human rights by occupying forces, including through group punishments, sieges, forced displacement, starvation, arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearance, terrorism, destruction of property, settlement expansion and murder.

Al Zaabi affirmed that abandoning the Palestinian people will continue their suffering from violations of international law and humanitarian law, as well as the denial of truth, rights, justice and international legitimacy on which the Human Rights Council is based.

He also thanked the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the "Special Rapporteur on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories" for their reports.
