World Space Week Activities Concludes Amid Active Participation Of Students

MIRPURKHAS, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Oct, 2016 ) : World Space Week organized by Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), concluded here the other day with a variety of activities and events to mark importance of modern science and technology and to highlight their contribution to the betterment of the human being.
The theme for World Space Week 2016 was "Remote Sensing Enabling our Future" to explain that how remote sensing satellites or imagery helping scientists and researchers for the betterment of the general public like crop monitoring, disaster management, mineral exploration etc.
In Umerkot the Space week was celebrated at government girls High School and government boys Higher Secondary School From October 19 to October 25 2016 in which different competitions, activities program were organized.
It included Quiz competition, Science, Art and technology Exhibition, astronomy night, essay speech, Poster Making Competition , model making, Tableaus , Sense Drama. Quiz Competitions were conducted among the school students on the theme related to Space Technology, Navigation and Applications.
Water Rocket competition was conducted among the school students to promote space awareness and create interest in aerospace, aeronautics and physics among youth through the science of water rockets during World Space Week.Space theater was also part of it.
Participants were to learn about space in a more entertaining manner and put forward their ideas and perceptions about Space Technology. Students of various government and private schools and colleges of Umerkot participated actively.
Expressing their views students said that this event was very informative and fruitful for them and it gave them chance to explore their talent.
Organizer of the week and assistant manager SUPARCO, Abdul Salam Kunbhar, said SUPARCO, as a national space agency has been regularly conducting WSW activities each year to increase awareness of space technology and to promote its peaceful use among students and the masses in Pakistan since 2005.
District education Officer Ghulam Asghar Shaikh expressing his views said such events were very useful and healthy for students, adding that SUPARCO has initiated the and the same will be continued by them.
Muhammad Jamil Kunbhar, representative of SUPARCO said information and knowledge of government and private schools of rural areas in the field of space science was bit poor, however a lot of efforts for example modification of text books, teachers training, sessions, lectures and space awareness program etc were needed to be done in this context to prepare the new generation for becoming space scientists.
Adding that Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space weather, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Remote Sensing and GIS all comes under the Space science but youth of Pakistan was less aware about those scientific advancement therefore such events were need of the hour.
He deplored that in government and private schools very little or few topics were included in the text books while most of them were obsolete regarding the information related to these fields. Labs, equipment and Techniques required teaching such topics were yet to be developed as well.
Students who shown extraordinary performance were given prizes, shields and appreciation certificates.
