The Syrian government's military operations in Aleppo are legitimate because they are aimed at driving terrorists out, Syrian Ambassador in Moscow Riyad Haddad said on Wednesday
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) The Syrian government's military operations in Aleppo are legitimate because they are aimed at driving terrorists out, Syrian Ambassador in Moscow Riyad Haddad said on Wednesday
Aleppo is a part of the Idlib de-escalation zone where a ceasefire was introduced under Russian-Turkish mediation from January 9. However, militants continue attacking the Syrian armed forces and civilians, despite the truce.
"The operations that are being currently conducted in Aleppo, from the south, with the support of our Russian friends, are legitimate.
This is to ensure that our government controls the entire territory of the Syrian Arab Republic," Haddad said at a meeting at the Russian upper house.
He added that Syria would continue fighting terrorism "until the last inch of our land is liberated."
According to the diplomat, the main problem at the moment is the illegitimate presence of foreign troops in the northeast of the country, with their expulsion remaining a core priority.
