The Khyber Pakthunkhwa (KP) government have planned to setup modern rehabilitation centers for drug addicts and educational institutes for special children in different districts of the province in order to bring them into national mainstream.

"Development of an integrated and comprehensive social protection system for an assistance of deprived segment of society is a key focused area of provincial government and under this landmark initiative of PTI Govt, latest rehabilitation centres for treatment of drug addicts and educational institutes for special children including deaf and dumb would be constructed in next five years," a senior official in Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Development KP told APP on Tuesday.

The official said 11 rehabilitation centres were already existed in the province out of which five were fully functional while remaining six would become functional in current fiscal year after provision of equipments, furniture and recruitment of staff.

Three social welfare complexes were completed for integration of various social and special services besides setting up of nine children protection units in the province. Three 'Darul Kafala' (rehabilitation centres) for beggars was also constructed.

The PTI Govt has completed construction of buildings for seven special welfare and seven Zakat and Usher offices in various districts for destitute people.

At least 13 special education institutions were constructed and sixteen special education institution up to middle, secondary and higher secondary level were up graded aimed at to provide quality education facilities to children with disabilities at their doorstep.

"Protection and promotion of rights of poor, destitute and disadvantage persons and women through institutional care and social assistance is a top priority of the Government and to achieve these objectives, a comprehensive plan was chalked out to provide latest facilities in buildings including lift and ramp etc for assistance of disabled people," the official maintained.

Modification in 29 buildings were completed by making it accessible for persons with disabilities (PWD), saying missing facilities in 21 special education institutions were strengthened for assistance of PWD besides in-service training institution with school for special children were completed for capacity enhancement of special teachers.

The KP Government has taken lead by establishing five shelter homes and Darul Aman for accommodation of homeless children and women. Five centres for survivors of violence were also established for women.

In addition to construction of three hostels for working women, missing facilities were provided to five such hostels with foolproof security arrangements.

The KP Government has expedited work on different projects including construction an art centre for persons with disabilities with facilities of vocational training, essential accessibility, business development, disability commission, inclusive education, employment, health empowerment, legal assistance and social inclusion during 2018-23 period.

Work on up-gradation of school from Primary to middle at Charsadda for blind children has been expedited and efforts are on to complete it by June 30 next year with an estimated cost of Rs35.5 million.

Art school for deaf and dumb is being constructed at Charsadda with an estimated cost of Rs 10.64million besides a mega special welfare complex costing Rs89.802million in Nowshera where all educational institutes, schools, offices etc of the department would be assembled.

Up-gradation of national centre for education in Mardan costing Rs59 million would be completed by June 2019 whereas a deaf and dumb school at Katlang Mardan costing Rs17 million would be ready in next three years.

Govt expedited work on two education centres for education of special children at Timergara and Chakldara in Dir Lower with an estimated cost of Rs118.946 million. Under a development plan, at least one special educational institute would be up-graded at each divisional level at a cost of Rs122.089 million with latest facilities for persons with disabilities.
