Says a powerful has been punished for the first time by the justice system in Pakistan
Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 6th July, 2018) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan addressed a public meeting in Swat on Friday, following the much awaited verdict in Avenfield Reference against Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt (r) Safdar.
“I thank Allah that a powerful has been punished for the first time by the justice system in Pakistan; otherwise, only the poor and weak went to jails. All the Pakistanis should offer two Nafils today. This is the beginning of a new Pakistan,” the PTI chairman said.
“I came in politics because corruption was taking us back. When I used to come to Pakistan from India, I felt like I was coming from a poor country to a rich country,” he said.
“Pakistan was ahead in everything in the sub-continent. In Zia’s era, one person Nawaz Sharif started corruption in this country. They bought voters in non-party based elections,” Khan said.
“They destroyed the institutions of the country. When a leader does corruption, he does it by paralysing the institutions, leaving the country behind,” he further said.
“Pakistan has resources but corruption ate it. Every child of Pakistan is indebted today,” he said.
Corruption is the reason of the debts Pakistan is facing, he said.
“This is Allah’s blessing that Panama revelations were made and then Nawaz Sharif’s sons said that these are their flats. We held protests and went to Supreme Court. They registered 32 FIRs against me, to shut me. I answered it by bringing my money back to Pakistan,” Khan recalled.
Their children have properties worth billions of rupees but they said that they are not Pakistani nationals, he said.
We only did an effort and Allah succeeded us, he said.
The Accountability Court has announced its verdict in the Avenfield Reference after delaying it for four times since Friday morning. According to the verdict, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been sentenced to jail for 10 years, his daughter Maryam Nawaz for seven years and Maryam's husband Capt (r) Safdar for one year.
Moreover, Nawaz Sharif has been fined £8 million in the case while Maryam Nawaz has been fined £2 million. The London flats will also be sealed, according to the verdict.
The NAB prosecutor general said that the Sharif family failed to provide a money trail.
Following the verdict, Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (r) Safdar also stand disqualified to contest general elections 2018.
