LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 12th Jan, 2017 ) : A crackdown has been launched against those involved in manufacturing illegal number plates and the owners of vehicles using such ones. The Chief Minister's Special Monitoring Unit (Law & Order) in collaboration with the Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control department (ET&NC), Punjab Police, Punjab Safe Cities Authority and the CCPO Office Lahore held a press conference regarding the enforcement of an intense crackdown in the province against manufacturers and holders of illegal number plates, at Directorate General Public Relations, says a handout issued here on Thursday.
The conference panel comprising DIG Operations Dr. Haider Ashraf, DG ET&NC Muhammad Akram Ashraf Gondal and member SMU (Law & Order) Salman Sufi shared the figures regarding this on-going crackdown.
Salman Sufi gave a detailed overview regarding all Punjab Special Campaign by police against unauthorized usage of green number plates, unauthorized usage of Police number plates, vehicles without number plates & those with fake number plates.
He told that a fine of Rs 4,995,600 had been imposed on 24,978 owners of the vehicles using green number plates illegally besides a fine of more than Rs 1,492,800 was imposed on those using 4976 unauthorized police number plates.

DG ET&NC provided details regarding an eight-week campaign initiated by the ET&NC department against unregistered fake plates and users of fake plates.
The exercise resulted in the inspection of more than 250,000 vehicles all over Punjab and revenue generation of more than Rs 117 million. He further informed that 180,000 vehicles with fake plates and more than 3000 applied-for vehicles in Lahore had been fined.
Furthermore, a crackdown against manufacturers of fake plates was carried out in areas surrounding Farid Kot house in collaboration with Lahore Police. In aggregate, a total of 22 shops were inspected and 1700 number plates were captured as a result of this activity.
DIG Operations, informed the media that there would be a dedicated collaboration between Traffic Police, ET&NC Department and Punjab Police and a zero tolerance policy against manufacturers and holders of fake plates.
All such vehicles were untraceable by the cameras installed through the Safe Cities project and since no record was available in the E&T database regarding their ownership they pose a huge security threat.
The strict enforcement of the crackdown would lead to better law enforcement and serve to be a precautionary measure in eventually eliminating possible terrorist attacks that use untraceable (fake) number plates in their activities.
Warnings would be given to carriers of pre-MTMIS (plates issued before 2006) number plates, while the rest of vehicles carrying fake plates will be duly fined.
