Russian Scientists to Simulate Lunar Base Conditions in Antarctic - Research Institute

Russian scientists will test for the ideal conditions for future lunar base crews through simulation studies in the Antarctic, Oleg Orlov, the director of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told reporters on Monday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 03rd June, 2019) Russian scientists will test for the ideal conditions for future lunar base crews through simulation studies in the Antarctic, Oleg Orlov, the director of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian academy of Sciences, told reporters on Monday.

"Different geographic zones are used to test the requirements for future crews.

For example, we have now resumed our participation in the Antarctic expedition program, bearing in mind the interest in working out the requirements for future crews of lunar bases," he said.

Orlov added that this would be a long-term project.

In March, Sergei Krikalev, the executive director of manned spaceflights at Russian State Space Agency Roscosmos, said that Russia planned to start building a lunar base for cosmonauts after 2030. According to Krikalev, the base will be used for short- and, eventually, long-term stays on the Moon.
