At least 53 journalists were killed on the job in 2018, making it the deadliest of the past three years, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in a press release on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th December, 2018) At least 53 journalists were killed on the job in 2018, making it the deadliest of the past three years, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in a press release on Wednesday.

"At least 53 journalists were killed on the job this year ...

[making] 2018 the deadliest year for journalists in the past three years, according to CPJ data," the release said.

CPJ said 34 of those journalists were targeted for murder in reprisal for their work.

Extremists stepped up attacks against journalists in Afghanistan, making that country the deadliest, followed by Syria and India, the release added.

In additional to the physical dangers facing reporters, CPJ said that many world leaders are increasingly spouting anti-press rhetoric.
