African Leaders Inaugurate Statue of Emperor Haile Selassie at African Union's HQ

ADDIS ABABA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th February, 2019) The leaders of the African Union (AU), attending the bloc's 32nd Summit, observed the inauguration of the statue of late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Sunday.

The ceremony of inauguration was also attended by descendants of the Ethiopian royal family, whose arrival was accompanied by a marching band.

The AU has chosen to unveil the commemorative statue to recognize Emperor Selassie's contribution to Africa's liberty and union, leading to the establishment of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, which was a predecessor of the African Union.
