An exhibition by the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest, organized by the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency, opened in the Czech capital on Thursday, featuring more than 30 award-winning photographs from the 2018 contest from Iran, Italy, Russia, South Africa and Spain, among other countries
The exhibition is being held at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Prague and will run through February 28.
"We are happy that the touring exhibition of the Stenin contest winners included Prague in 2019, a city known for its unique artistic atmosphere and cultural traditions. For us this is a wonderful opportunity to show Prague's public with the works of the world's best young photojournalists, and inform local photographers of the contest, the main goal of which is to support their professional growth," Oksana Oleinik, curator of the photo contest and the head of the Visual Projects Service of the Rossiya Segodnya United Photo Information Directorate, said at the opening of the exhibition.
She noted that the website stenincontest.com would be accepting submissions for this year's contest until February 28, adding that the organizers would be happy to see young Czech photojournalists participating.
"This exhibition features works by the winners of an international photo contest that is becoming increasingly popular.
To create these images, the photographers traveled far and wide to witness political and sporting events, or natural disasters and social upheavals, sometimes risking their lives. Thanks to the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest, the public can learn about the courage and professionalism of those who make photojournalism their mission," Andrei Konchakov, the acting director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Prague, said.
The exhibitions of the 2018 contest's best photographs have already been showcased at the UN headquarters in New York, Beirut, Brussels, Bueno Aires, Cape Town, Madrid, Moscow, Shanghai and Tel Aviv.
The Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest was first organized in December 2014 in memory of Russian photojournalist Andrei Stenin. He was killed while on assignment in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine on August 6, 2014, after his car burned down after being shot at on a highway. The photo contest aims to promote young photographers and attract public attention to photojournalism.
The contest's general media partners included the news website Vesti.Ru and the Russian state Rossiya-Kultura tv channel. Its international media partners included Sputnik News Agency and Radio, Notimex news agency, RT TV channel and news site, Shanghai United Media Group (SUMG), ANA news agency, the China Daily website and others.
