Armenia Likely to Recall Khachaturov From Post of CSTO Head - President

Yerevan will most likely recall Yuri Khachaturov, who served as deputy defense minister of Armenia at the time when protests broke out in Yerevan in 2008, from the post of the secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO),

MINSK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 01st November, 2018) Yerevan will most likely recall Yuri Khachaturov, who served as deputy defense minister of Armenia at the time when protests broke out in Yerevan in 2008, from the post of the secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Armenian President Armen Sarkissian said Thursday.

In July, Khachaturov was charged with overthrowing the country's constitutional order during the rallies. According to media reports, Khachaturov was the commander of the Yerevan garrison and participated in suppressing the protests. The next day, a court in Yerevan released the CSTO head on bail.

"Since he [Khachaturov] is the representative of the Republic of Armenia, Armenia has the right to decide, in principle, to let its representative remain .

.. the secretary general or not. At the moment, there is a certain legal process underway in this direction. Armenia is likely to call its representative back," Sarkissian told reporters.

In August, Khachaturov resumed his work as the head of the Moscow-based CSTO after his return to the Russian capital from Yerevan.

CSTO is an intergovernmental alliance focused on military cooperation. Full members include Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. Khachaturov has been the secretary general of the organization since May last year.
