MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th March, 2019) European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told Germany's Deutschlandfunk radio on Wednesday that a decision on Brexit was unlikely this week at the European Council summit, but another meeting was possible the next week.
"My assessment is you may be surprised that there will be no decision this week because of the European Council, but that we probably have to meet again next week because [UK Prime Minister Theresa] Mrs May does not have any agreement either in her Cabinet or in Parliament," Juncker told the outlet.
Juncker added that the United Kingdom would not, "in all likelihood," leave the European Union on March 29, as originally expected.
The UK House of Commons has rejected the withdrawal deal agreed by the UK government and the European Union twice. The parliament has voted against a no-deal Brexit, but in favor of an exit delay.
According to media reports, May will ask Brussels for an extension, but a short one. An extension of up to June 30 would allow the United Kingdom to remain in the bloc without holding the European elections in late May. The new European Parliament session will begin on July 2.
