DAMASCUS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Jan, 2019 ) :Geir Pedersen, newly appointed UN envoy to Syria, will start a three-day visit to the Arab country on Monday, the pro-government al-Watan newspaper reported.
It will be the first visit of Pederson, a Norwegian diplomat, to Syria since his recent appointment after the resignation of his predecessor, Staffan de Mistura, over personal reasons after four years as the UN envoy to Syria.
Ayman Soussan, assistant of the Syrian Foreign Minister, was cited by al-Watan as saying the new envoy would achieve what his predecessors could not.
The Syrian government has expressed readiness to cooperate with the new UN envoy to make his mission a success, the newspaper said.
During his four-year mission in Syria, Mistura could not mediate a workable solution between the Syrian government and the opposition to end the more than seven-year crisis.
