Russian TU-95MS Strategic Bombers Hit Targets During Vostok-2018 Drills - Defense Ministry

Russia's Tu-95MS strategic bombers have successfully hit targets with cruise missiles during the Vostok-2018 large-scale military drills in the Russian eastern region of Buryatia, the country's Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

"The strategic missile carriers Tu-95MS of the long-range aviation Aerospace Forces within the maneuvers of the Vostok-2018 drills have carried out practice launches of cruise missiles from a height of more than 5,000 meters [3 miles] on ground targets at the Telemba training ground in Buryatia," the ministry said in a statement, adding that the strikes were successful.

Vostok-2018, the largest military exercises held by Russia in over 30 years, kicked off on Tuesday at five ranges in the east of Russia, and in the waters of the Sea of Japan, Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. The drills will end on Monday.

Before the drills began, it was estimated that 300,000 troops would participate. Vostok-2018 has gained an international status, with troops from China and Mongolia taking part in one of the stages.
