The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is extremely concerned over the recent reports that as many as 30 children had been killed in eastern Syria, Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said Friday.
"UNICEF is alarmed by recent reports of up to 30 children who have been killed in recent violence in Al Shafa village, in eastern Syria ... These reported killings demonstrate that the war on children is far from over in Syria," Cappelaere said, as quoted in the organization's statement.
On Tuesday, Syrian media reported that at least 60 civilians were killed in Shafa in a strike of the International Coalition against the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia).
UK Maj. Gen. Christopher Ghika, Deputy Commander for Strategy and Information at the Coalition's Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve said Tuesday that the reports of civilians deaths in Shafa and Gamsha were "unsubstantiated at this stage." Ghika added that the coalition would investigate the allegations.
