Asia Cricket Council (ACC) was established on 19 September 1983 in New Delhi, India, to develop Cricket and encourage good terms between Asian cricketing countries. The Asia Cup is for cricketing countries of the continent of Asia. It is held every two years as ODI and T20 tournaments.

The members of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) are Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, and Afghanistan. This time, Men’s ODI Asia Cup 2023 is happening in Pakistan and Sri Lanka between six Asian Cricketing Nations, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

1st  Asia Cup 1984 Winner - India

The first Asia Cup occurred in 1984 in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Three teams entered the Asia Cup, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka.

Each team played against each other once.

India won two matches, and Sri Lanka won one match in this tournament. The winner was decided on the number of matches the team won. So India won the first Asia Cup and Sri Lanka was the runner-up.

2nd Asia Cup 1986 Winner - Sri Lanka

The second Asia Cup took place in Sri Lanka in the year 1986. Three teams entered the Asia Cup. But India refused to play with Sri Lanka due to unpleasant relations with Sri Lanka. After this, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) decided to replace India with another country, Bangladesh.

All the teams played once against each other and Pakistan and Sri Lanka reached the final match. Sri Lanka won the match against Pakistan and became the Asia Cup winner. 

3rd Asia Cup 1988 Winner - India

The third Asia Cup took place in Bangladesh in the year 1988. Four teams entered the tournament, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Each team played against the other three teams.

Pakistan won a single match against Bangladesh and was defeated by India and Sri Lanka. India won two matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan and was defeated by Sri Lanka. Bangladesh lost all three matches against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and  India. Sri Laka won all three matches against Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. 

India and Sri Lanka became the finalists and India won the match by six wickets against Sri Lanka.

4th Asia Cup 1990-91 Winner - India

The fourth Asia Cup occurred in India between three teams India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Pakistan was withdrawn from the tournament due to poor political relations between Pakistan and India. 

These three teams played against each other. Bangladesh lost both matches against India and Sri Lanka and was disqualified from the final. Sri Lanka won both matches from the opponent teams. India won one match against Bangladesh. 

India and Sri Lanka qualified for the final, and India won the title against Sri Lanka by seven wickets.

5th Asia Cup 1995 Winner - India

Fifth Asia Cup was not held in 1993 due to poor political relations between Pakistan and India. In 1995 the fifth Asia Cup took place in Sharjah again. Four teams took part, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh. 

India won two matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Pakistan won two matches against India and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka won two matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan. Bangladesh won none of the matches.

Sri Lanka and India became finalists because of better run rates and India defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets.

6th Asia Cup 1997 Winner - Sri Lanka

Sixth Asia Cup was held in Sri Lanka in 1997, and the same four teams were present in this tournament. Pakistan won the match against Bangladesh, and the match between Pakistan and India was held two times. First-time match ended with no results, and second-time match was abandoned.

Sri Lanka won all three matches. Bangladesh lost all matches. India won from Sri Lanka. Resultantly, India and Sri Lanka qualified for The Final, and  Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup from India by eight wickets. 

7th Asia Cup 2000 Winner - Pakistan

The seventh Asia Cup was held in Bangladesh in the year 2000. The same four teams took part in this tournament. Pakistan won all three matches against India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. India won only a single match against Bangladesh. Again Bangladesh lost all the matches and Sri Lanka won two matches.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka became the finalists, and Pakistan won the Asia Cup for the first time against Sri Lanka by 39 runs.

8th Asia Cup 2004 Winner - Sri Lanka

The eighth Asia Cup was held in Sri Lanka in the year 2004. This year new Asian teams played the Asian Cup for the first time, Hong Kong and UAE along with the same four teams, and the game format was changed.

The six teams were divided into two groups. Sri Lanka, India, and UAE were in Group A, and Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong were in Group B. 

Hong Kong and UAE were eliminated in the group stage, and the remaining four teams entered the super four. Pakistan and Bangladesh were eliminated in the super four. Sri Lanka and India qualified for the final, and Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup third time by 25 runs. 

9th Asia Cup 2008 WInner - Sri Lanka

The Ninth Asia Cup was held in Pakistan in the year 2008. The same 2004 format was repeated. Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup for the first time. The same teams were present in this Asia Cup that were in the 2004 Asia Cup.

Two groups were made with Group A having Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and UAE, and Group B, having Pakistan, India, and Hong Kong. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India entered the Super 4 and Sri Lanka and India became the finalists. 

Sri Lanka won the match by 100 runs and won the Asia Cup for the fourth time. 

10th Asia Cup 2010 Winner - India

The tenth Asia Cup was held in Sri Lanka in the year 2010. Sri Lanka hosted the Asia Cup for the fourth time. Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka participated in this tournament.

India and Sri Lanka became the finalists. India won by 81 runs from Sri Lanka and became the fifth-time Asia Cup Champion. 

11th Asia Cup 2012 Winner - Pakistan

The Eleventh Asia Cup was held in Bangladesh. Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka and India first time in history and became a finalist for the first time with Pakistan.

But unfortunately, Bangladesh didn’t make it in the final. Pakistan won the Asia Cup for the second time in history by winning the match by two runs.

12th Asia Cup 2014 Winner - Sri Lanka

The twelfth Asia Cup was held in Bangladesh. This tournament consisted of five teams, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. Afghanistan played the Asia Cup for the first time. 

Pakistan and Sri Lanka became the finalist of the twelfth Asia Cup, and Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by five wickets and won the Asia Cup for the fifth time.

13th Asia Cup 2016 Winner - India

This Asia Cup was also held in Bangladesh. It was played in the T20 format. Five teams played this time including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, and UAE.

India and Bangladesh qualified for the final, and India defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets. This year India won the Asia Cup for the sixth time.

14th Asia Cup 2018 Winner - India

The fourteenth Asia Cup was held in the United Arab Emirates for the third time. Five full members of ACC took part in this tournament. These are Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.

India and Bangladesh became finalists, and India defeated Bangladesh by three wickets in the final. India won the seventh Asia Cup in the year 2018.

15th Asia Cup 2022 Winner - Sri Lanka

The Fifteenth Asia Cup was held again in UAE in the year 2022, hosted by Sri Lanka. This time Asia Cup was held with a gap of three years because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

India was eliminated in the super four, and Pakistan and Sri Lanka became the finalists. Sri Lanka won the match by 23 runs and won its sixth Asia Cup in the year 2022.

Who Will Win The 16th Asia Cup 2023?

Pakistan will host the 2023 Asia Cup. Six teams will participate in this tournament including five full members of the Asia Cricket Council (ACC), Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Nepal joined the Asia Cup for the first time because Nepal qualified for the ACC Men’s Premier Cup 2023.

Due to the political crisis with Pakistan, India refused to play in Pakistan. And now the matches will also be played at the neutral venue, Sri Lanka.

The six teams are divided into two groups. Group A consist of Pakistan, India, and Nepal. Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. 

Pakistan seems to be the most favorite team of the tournament as it is second on the list of top ODI teams currently. We hope Pakistan wins the Asia Cup 2023 and will continue the win streak in the Cricket World Cup 2023.
