KASSEL (Germany) (UrduPoint news / Sputnik - 21st March, 2019) German oil and gas producer Wintershall has no information regarding Russian gas giant Gazprom reportedly planning to halt gas transit via Ukraine in 2020, Wintershall CEO Mario Meren said on Thursday.
Andriy Kobolyev, the CEO of Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz, told Ukrainian media earlier on Thursday that Gazprom had already started officially notifying states neighboring Ukraine or dependent on Russian gas transit via Ukraine that the transit would be suspended in 2020.
"No one has provided us with information that gas transit would not continue.
[Gazprom CEO] Alexey Borisovich Miller ... told us that transit would continue after 2019, and trilateral talks between the European Union, Ukraine and Russia [on gas transit] are underway," Meren told reporters at a press conference.
He recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin had also stated that gas transit would continue.
The current contract regulating the transit of the Russian gas through Ukraine expires at the end of 2019. Russia has repeatedly stated that its Nord Stream 2 project did not imply that the transit of Russian gas to the European Union via Ukraine would be terminated.
