MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday said it was deploying its Preparedness Support Team in Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda as well as other countries bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the DRC.
On Tuesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the risk of the international spread of the current Ebola outbreak in the DRC was low.
"Following the ongoing #Ebola outbreak in #DRC, four neighbouring countries #Burundi, #Rwanda, #SouthSudan and #Uganda have been prioritized to enhance operational readiness and preparedness.
WHO is deploying Preparedness Support Team in these and other neighbouring countries," WHO wrote on its Twitter page.
Last week, a total of 44 Ebola cases have been reported in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces, including 17 confirmed and 27 probable ones.
The Ebola virus was first identified in 1970s in the DR Congo in a village near the Ebola River, which gave a name to the disease. The largest Ebola outbreak took place in West Africa in 2014-2015, with more than 11,000 people having died and some 28,000 cases having been reported.
