The Lahore High Court (LHC) was informed on Friday that a committee had been formed to decide the fate of 56 public sector companies.
The statement was made by an additional advocate general on behalf of the Punjab government before Justice Shahid Karim, who was hearing identical petitions against functioning of the public sector companies.
The law officer further submitted that Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar would head the committee which would review performance of these companies and finalise a proposal for closure of some companies. He said that committee's proposal would be presented in the cabinet meeting for final approval.
At this, the court directed for finalising the proposal regarding public sector companies and sought a report on the next date of hearing, January 17.
Petitioner counsel Sheraz Zaka had submitted that the public sector companies were functioning in violation of the Article 140 of the Constitution and affected the functioning of local governments.
He said that the 56 companies had made political appointments comprising provincial assembly members which should be declared in violation of the Public Sector Companies Rules 2013.
Meanwhile, the court also restrained MPA Shakil Shahid from exercising the powers of chairman of Faisalabad Waste Management Company, while hearing an identical petition.
