The spokesman informed that USPCAS-W was working on higher education and high quality applied research in the water sector for the purpose to resolve the water related problems of Pakistan. In this regard, several research initiatives have been taken and one of them is the scientific study of Manchhar Lake, he said and added that the Manchhar, the largest freshwater lake in Asia, has been renowned for its rich flora and fauna, as well as sustaining fishing and agricultural communities through the lake water.
In the past decades, he informed that water quality deterioration has resulted in the significant reduction in fish supply and lower agricultural yield and the environmental degradation of the Lake compels the fisher folk to look elsewhere for the employment.
The spokesman informed that Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) with the patronage of USPCAS-W initiated a well-designed study in April 2016 to assess the Environmental Degradation of the Lake.
The one year study was aimed to evaluate the pollution level and its sources in the Manchar Lake, he informed and added that water quality was tested for physicochemical, biological, heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants like (POPs), COD, and BOD.
The qualitative analysis of gender was also conducted and the inflows as well as outflows of the Lake were recorded and impact of polluted water on agricultural soil was studied. The study report will be presented for discussion in the national workshop tomorrow, the spokesman said.
