US pop singer Madonna and Icelandic band Hatari have displayed Palestinian flags during their performances in the final of the Eurovision song contest in Tel Aviv without the approval of the show's organizers
GAZA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th May, 2019) US pop singer Madonna and Icelandic band Hatari have displayed Palestinian flags during their performances in the final of the Eurovision song contest in Tel Aviv without the approval of the show's organizers.
During Madonna's performance late on Saturday, two of her dancers, who had Israeli and Palestinian flags attached to the back of their outfits, could be seen embracing each other and holding arms.
"Madame ... is a freedom fighter ................ I am grateful. For the opportunity to spread the message of peace and unity with the world," Madonna tweeted after the performance.
The organizers said that the display of the flags had not been coordinated in advance and reminded the pop diva that Eurovision was not a political event.
The Icelandic band, in turn, raised at least two scarfs in the colors of the Palestinian flag while their results were being announced. Hatari later posted a video on social media, showing the organizers demanding that the band hand over the flags.
The European Broadcasting Union, the organizer of the Eurovision, said that it would consider possible disciplinary action against the band.
Palestine remains only partially recognized and claims the territories of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, but Israel refuses to recognize the neighboring country as an independent state.
