New Kangaroos skipper Inglis busted drink driving: report

Newly appointed Kangaroos skipper Greg Inglis faced pressure to step down Tuesday after he was reportedly caught drink driving just hours after being named in the prestigious role.

Sydney, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 2nd Oct, 2018 ) :Newly appointed Kangaroos skipper Greg Inglis faced pressure to step down Tuesday after he was reportedly caught drink driving just hours after being named in the prestigious role.

Australian Rugby League coach Mal Meninga handed Inglis the captain's armband early Monday, selecting the Queenslander to replace retiring Cameron Smith over main rival Boyd Cordner.

However, Channel Nine television reported Inglis was pulled over for speeding that afternoon and charged with drink driving after failing a breath test.

Police said a 31-year-old man driving a black Mercedes was pulled over on Monday afternoon near Lithgow, west of Sydney.

"Police stopped the car and performed a roadside breath test on the 31-year-old driver, a man from Coogee, which allegedly returned a positive reading," they said in a statement.

Inglis will reportedly appear in Lithgow court on speeding and drink driving charges on November 22.

NRL.com reported that the NRL Integrity Unit would investigate before a decision was made on whether Inglis will face disciplinary action.

But Test selector Laurie Daley said Inglis's position as skipper was untenable if the allegations were true, and that he must step down immediately.

Daley, himself a former Test captain, said Meninga had previously taken a hard line on player misbehaviour and could not let a drink driving offence slide.

"I don't think you can have the Australian captain going DUI (driving under the influence)," he told commercial radio.

"I'm pretty sure Greg and Mal will come to the decision that he needs to step down as captain of his country. He's let himself down. He's let the game down and he'll pay a massive price for that."Inglis is yet to comment on the reports but Sydney media said he will make a statement later Tuesday in which is likely end his brief tenure as captain.
