MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th December, 2018) The bill on autonomous Runet the Russian segment of the internet will protect the country from cyberattacks and from being disconnected from the global network for politically-motivated reasons, Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of the Russian parliament's upper house, said on Monday.

"Taking into consideration what is currently happening in the international arena, and you see what is happening, we should protect the Russian segment of the Internet from possible cyberattacks ... Do you understand what consequences will emerge if Russia is disconnected from the global network, from the global information? This will paralyze the life of our community, of our state," Matviyenko told reporters, when asked to comment on the necessity of passing the bill.

The bill, which envisages the creation of an infrastructure that would ensure operation of Internet resources in Russia in case the country's providers are disconnected from the global Internet system, was submitted to the State Duma, the lower house of the country's parliament, in mid-December.

Along with the bill on autonomous Runet, Russian lawmakers also submitted to the State Duma a bill enabling Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor to centrally administer Internet and communications networks in case of a security threat from abroad.

The bills were prepared taking into account the "aggressive nature" of the US National Cyber Strategy adopted in September.
