PARIS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 05th June, 2019) French flag-carrier Air France promised Wednesday to reduce its plastic waste by 1,300 tonnes this year, in an effort to cut the climate footprint.
"Air France will eliminate 210 million single-use plastic items by the end of 2019. They will be replaced by sustainable alternatives on all flights," the airline said in a statement.
This means the end of the road for plastic cutlery, cups and stirrers, ahead of an EU-wide ban on single-use plastic in 2021. They will be replaced with bio-based materials such as wood and paper, the company said.
The air carrier has already cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent per passenger since 2011. It hopes that by adding a new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jet to its air fleet it will dramatically slash emissions and fuel consumption.
