The leaders of the EU member states are likely to discuss on May 9 a possibility of holding an extraordinary summit on the results of the European Parliament elections, which will be held in late May, a source told Sputnik on Friday
The source said that he could not confirm the specific date, but believed that President of the European Council Donald Tusk would discuss the issue with the EU leaders in Sibiu, a city in Romania, which will be held on May 9. The source was commenting on reports, claiming that the extraordinary summit could take place on May 28.
EU heads of state or government are expected to join the informal European Council in Sibiu. Tusk will chair the meeting, while European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Parliament President Antonio Tajani will also be present at the event.
This month, Europe is bracing for the landmark European Union's parliamentary elections that will take place on May 23-26. All adult citizens of the bloc are due to select those who are to represent them in the European Parliament.
