ADDIS ABABA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th February, 2019) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi will be successful in promoting progress in the African Union (AU) during his AU chairmanship, Mahmoud Abbas, the president of Palestine, said at the opening ceremony of the 32nd AU Summit on Sunday.
Egypt is taking over AU chairmanship from Rwanda at the event.
"We wish the Egyptian chair, [who] will take over the mantle, President Abdel Fattah Sisi, success in 2019, and we are convinced that he will score victories with his wisdom and make the AU achieve more progress and more prosperity," Abbas said.
Earlier in the day, Stephen Masele, the first vice president of the AU Pan-African Parliament, has voiced support for Sisi, stressing the latter's experience in fighting terrorism, while Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chair of the AU Commission, said that Sisi would give AU a new impetus.
Abbas also expressed the belief that South Africa would promote the goals of Palestine in the UN Security Council, as a newly appointed member.
"We are convinced that this country will definitely play a positive role in the goals of Palestine," he said.
On January 1, South Africa took up its seat as a UN Security Council non-permanent member for a two-year term, following its election to the council in June 2018.
