World's Highest Highway Tunnel Opens in Mountains in Chinese Tibet - Reports

The world's highest highway tunnel has opened in China's Tibet Autonomous Region at an altitude of over 4,750 meters (15,583 feet) above sea, local media reported on Friday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th April, 2019) The world's highest highway tunnel has opened in China's Tibet Autonomous Region at an altitude of over 4,750 meters (15,583 feet) above sea, local media reported on Friday.

According to Xinhua agency, the two-way 5.7 km (3,5 miles) long Mila Mountain Tunnel is a part of the 400 km (248,5 miles) highway and is linking Lhasa (regional capital) with Nyingchi in the southeast of Tibet.

The agency also stressed that the construction of the tunnel started back in 2015 on the 5,018 meter high Mila Mountain and was aimed to help shorten the 18-km distance over the mountain to 5.

According to Gong Bin, project manager of Mila Mountain Tunnel of the China Railway No. 2 Bureau, quoted by Global Times, more than 10 technological breakthroughs were during the construction, including improvement of survey accuracy of mountain tunnels in extremely cold weather and at high altitudes.

Gong also added that the highway would help enhance tourism and industrial development, as well as facilitate traffic in the region.
