Govt To Provide Subsidy On Sunflower Crop

The Punjab government has decided to provide subsidy of Rs 5,000 per acre on cultivation of sunflower with an aim to meet growing need of cooking oil.
Pakistan produces only 14 percent oil and it has to import 86 percent from various other countries. The government is focusing on promotion of sunflower and it set target to cultivate sunflower at 250,000 acres in the province, informed Assistant Director Agriculture Naveed Asmat Kohloon in a statement issued here.
Pakistan used to bear expenses of billions of rupees on import of the oil.
Naveed informed that sunflower crops provide handsome returns to farmers, adding that the crop become ready to generate income after 110 days of its cultivation.
He advised farmers to plant at least 22,000 to 25,000 plants per acre to get enhanced production of the crop, adding they should use only recommended varieties.
He urged farmers to contact the Agriculture departmentfor advisory.
