KARACHI, Oct 3 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 03rd Oct, 2017 ) : Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry has organised its 5th Export Trophy awards ceremony here on Wednesday. Federal Commerce and Textile Minister Muhammad Pervaiz Malik will be the chief guest at the programme; scheduled to start by 7 P.M.
at a local hotel, says FPCCI statement on Tuesday. FPCCI President Zubair Tufail said the FPCCI, the apex trade body of the country, had always been playing a dynamic role for the promotion of trade and industry in the country besides guarding the interests of the business community.
About FPCCI Export Trophy awards, he said FPCCI would confer 44 awards to the leading exporters of the country in different sectors including beverages, carpets, cement, confectionery, metal, dairy products, chemicals, engineering products, fertilizers, foods, fruits, furniture, jewelry, hosiery, leather, pharmaceutical, paper, paints, rice, scrap, soaps, sports equipment, surgical instruments, vegetables, waste products, wood and textiles along with services sector including airline, logistics, insurance, banking and information technology.
He said that S.M.Muneer patron-in-chief of United Business Group at FPCCI, and its chairman and veteran trade leader Iftikhar Ali Malik would be special guests on the occasion. Vice President SAARC Chamber and Chairman United Business Group (UBG) Iftikhar Ali Malik said FPCCI Export Trophy awards are considered highly prestigious at home and abroad, and the recipients of FPCCI awards enjoy an exalted position in international markets and were recognized as high profile exporters of the country.
There was a dire need of bringing down the cost of doing business in the country and in this regard, the only prescription to survive in the existing tough situation was to become more competitive, quality conscious and innovative.
He was of the view that the issues like falling exports competitiveness, lack of sophistication, diversification of products and markets stem from structural weaknesses inherent in the economy and those would been addressed on war footing.
Giving his recommendations for promoting exports of the country, he urged the government to revisit and negotiate anew the existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs).
Due to FTAs and PTAs, foreign goods had flooded into the local market. Similarity of these products with those manufactured locally has affected the local industry and units are being shut down causing damage to the economy, he said.
He urged that in the larger interest of the country, the government should form a committee of experts to examine these agreements to identify the clauses, products and agreed tariff concessions which were not in favour of Pakistan's industry and the economy.
